Antennarius Sp. - Red Angler Frog

Sold Out

The Red Angler, or Frogfish, is the ultimate master of mimicry and one of the most unique predators in the marine world. Known for its globular, "lumpy" body and vibrant red coloration, it is designed to blend perfectly into sponges and reef rubble. In the "Answering Machine" era of saltwater husbandry, the Angler is a prestige "species-only" resident, prized for its specialized hunting strategy.

Rather than chasing prey, the Angler uses a modified dorsal spine called an illicium, tipped with a fleshy lure (esca), which it wiggles to mimic a small fish or shrimp. When a target moves in to investigate, the Angler strikes with one of the fastest feeding mechanisms in the animal kingdom, expanding its mouth to swallow prey often as large as itself.

Quick Specs

  • Care Level: Moderate

  • Temperament: Predatory (Peaceful, but will eat anything it can swallow)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons

  • Diet: Carnivore (Ambush Predator)

  • Reef Compatible: Yes (But will eat small fish and ornamental shrimp)

  • Max Size: 4-6 Inches (depending on specific species)

  • Water Conditions: 72-78°F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.020-1.025

Husbandry Notes The Red Angler requires a specialized environment with low-to-moderate flow and plenty of "hitching" or perching spots like sponges, macroalgae, or rockwork. Because they are sedentary, they do not require a massive tank, but they do require excellent filtration to handle the waste from their large meals. They should be fed a variety of meaty marine foods; while they may initially require live ghost shrimp to trigger a feeding response, most can be transitioned to frozen silversides or mysis delivered via a feeding stick. Crucial: Do not house with aggressive fish that might nip at the Angler's delicate lure, and avoid tank mates small enough to be swallowed.
