Moenkhausia Sanctaefilomenae - Red Eye Tetra
The Moenkhausia Sanctaefilomenae - Red Eye Tetra is a spectacular centerpiece for the modern community aquarium, known for its brilliant coloration and sophisticated social behavior. Characterized by a shimmering silver body, a bold black tail band, and the iconic bright red "halo" around the eye, this species is a masterclass in aquatic aesthetics. In the "Answering Machine" era of characin husbandry, the Red Eye Tetra is highly prized for its hardiness and its ability to add a clean, metallic contrast to high-energy planted systems.
Unlike more skittish tetra varieties, Red Eyes are confident, mid-water swimmers that provide a stable, rhythmic presence in the tank. They are exceptionally active swimmers that occupy the middle and upper levels of the water column, providing a constant display of color and alert, schooling movement.

Husbandry Notes
The Red Eye Tetra is an ideal candidate for a community planted tank. While they are famously resilient and adaptable to a wide range of water parameters, they show their best behavior in schools of six or more where they feel secure. They are high-metabolism fish and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen meaty foods—such as daphnia and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp—at least twice daily. Their active nature makes them great companions for larger community fish, provided they have plenty of open swimming lanes.
