Pholidichthys Leucotaenia - Engineer Goby
Pholidichthys leucotaenia - Engineer Goby | Saltwater Fish
Product Description The Engineer Goby is the ultimate architect of the marine aquarium. Despite the name, these fish aren't true gobies—they are the sole members of their own family, more closely related to cichlids. As juveniles, they display striking horizontal black and white stripes, often being mistaken for Convict Blennies. As they mature, this pattern transforms into a complex, mottled marble effect. In the "Answering Machine" era of saltwater husbandry, the Engineer Goby is a "must-have" for hobbyists who want a fish that actively shapes its environment.
These fish are colonial by nature and spend nearly all their time excavating massive tunnel systems beneath the rockwork. They are high-interaction, hardy, and add a fascinating dynamic to the lower levels of the tank. Just be prepared—if you move a rock, they’ll probably move it back.

Quick Specs
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful
Minimum Tank Size: 55 Gallons
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Compatible: Yes
Max Size: 12 Inches
Water Conditions: 72-78°F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.020-1.025
Husbandry Notes The Engineer Goby requires a deep sand bed (at least 3-4 inches) and plenty of rubble to facilitate its natural digging behavior. Critical Note: Because these fish are relentless excavators, your rockwork must be placed directly on the bottom glass of the aquarium before adding sand. If rocks are placed on top of the sand, the Goby’s tunneling will cause the structure to collapse. They are peaceful toward tank mates and should be fed a variety of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, chopped krill, and sinking pellets.
