Valenciennea Puellaris - Orange Spot (Diamond) Goby
The Orange Spot Goby, widely known as the Diamond Watchman Goby, is the undisputed king of substrate maintenance. Featuring a sleek, white-to-silver body adorned with brilliant orange spots and iridescent blue highlights on the face, it is as beautiful as it is functional. In the "Answering Machine" era of saltwater husbandry, this fish is a foundational resident for any reef system with a sandy bottom, prized for its relentless "sand-sifting" behavior that keeps the substrate clean, aerated, and white.
Unlike some other gobies that stay hidden, the Diamond Goby is an active and visible worker. It spends its entire day taking mouthfuls of sand, filtering out organic matter through its gills, and depositing the clean sand back on the floor. It brings a sense of order and constant movement to the lower levels of the aquarium.

Quick Specs
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful
Minimum Tank Size: 30 Gallons
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Compatible: Yes
Max Size: 6 Inches
Water Conditions: 72-78°F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.020-1.025
Husbandry Notes The Diamond Goby requires a thick layer of fine-to-medium sand to perform its natural sifting behavior. While they are excellent scavengers, they should not rely solely on what they find in the substrate; supplement their diet with high-quality meaty foods like mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and sinking pellets. They are known to build "burrows" under rockwork, so ensure your aquascape is stable and resting on the glass rather than on top of the sand. Like most gobies, they are accomplished jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is mandatory.
