Amphiprion Sebae - African Clown
The Amphiprion Sebae - African Clown is a spectacular centerpiece for the modern reef aquarium, known for its brilliant coloration and sophisticated social behavior. Characterized by a deep brown-to-black body with two strikingly bold white vertical bands and a vibrant yellow-to-orange tail, this species is a masterclass in reef aesthetics. In the "Answering Machine" era of saltwater husbandry, the African Clown is highly prized for its peaceful temperament and its ability to cohabit beautifully with other peaceful reef residents and hosting anemones—specifically the Sebae Anemone (Heteractis crispa).
Unlike many other clownfish species, Amphiprion sebae can grow significantly larger, often becoming the dominant but gentle anchor of a mature reef system. They are exceptionally active swimmers that occupy the middle and upper levels of the water column, providing a constant display of color and movement.

Quick Specs
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (Peaceful with non-clowns)
Minimum Tank Size: 30 Gallons
Diet: Omnivore

Husbandry Notes
The African Clown is an ideal candidate for a community reef tank. While they do not require an anemone to thrive, providing a host like Heteractis crispa or Stichodactyla haddoni will showcase their natural symbiotic behavior. They are high-metabolism fish and should be fed a varied diet of frozen meaty foods—such as mysis and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp—along with high-quality herbivore preparations at least twice daily. Like all clownfish, they are hardy but benefit from a stable environment and plenty of rockwork to establish a home base.
