Canthigaster Valentini - Valentini Puffer
The Valentini Puffer, also known as the Saddled Toby, is a high-personality favorite for nano and mid-sized marine setups. Characterized by its distinct black "saddles" across a white, speckled body and vibrant yellow highlights on its fins, this fish brings a unique geometric aesthetic to the water column. In the "Answering Machine" era of saltwater husbandry, the Valentini is prized for its intelligence and inquisitive nature—often spending its day watching its keeper or meticulously inspecting the rockwork for a snack.
As a member of the Canthigaster genus, it remains much smaller than the giant Dogface puffers, making it accessible for a wider range of hobbyists. While it packs a lot of character into a small frame, it is a predator by nature and will use its beak-like teeth to explore anything that looks like food.

Quick Specs
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Minimum Tank Size: 30 Gallons
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Compatible: With Caution (May nip at corals and will eat small invertebrates)
Max Size: 4 Inches
Water Conditions: $72$ to $78^{\circ}F$, dKH $8$ to $12$, pH $8.1$ to $8.4$, sg $1.020$ to $1.025$
Husbandry Notes
The Valentini Puffer requires a varied diet to keep its teeth filed down and its immune system sharp. Offer a mix of high-quality meaty foods like mysis shrimp, krill, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp. Because puffers have fused teeth that grow continuously, providing hard-shelled foods like small snails or un-shelled shrimp is beneficial for their long-term health. Be aware that they are notorious "fin nippers" and should not be housed with slow-moving fish with long, flowing fins. They are generally safe with corals, but may occasionally nip at polyps or fleshy LPS if they aren't kept well-fed.
