About the Panther Grouper (Polka Dot Grouper)

The Panther Grouper is one of the most iconic "predator" fish in the saltwater hobby. Known for its distinct white body and bold black spots, it’s a showstopper in any large marine setup.

Origin: These fish hail from the tropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from Southern Japan to the Great Barrier Reef.

  • Size & Growth: While they start small and graceful, Panther Groupers can eventually reach up to 27 inches. They are fast growers, making them a "centerpiece" fish that requires a serious tank.

  • Tank Compatibility: They are best suited for FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) systems. While generally peaceful toward other large fish, they are opportunistic predators—if it fits in their mouth (small fish or shrimp), they will eat it!

  • Ideal Tank Size: Due to their adult size and high bioload, a 180-gallon tank or larger is recommended for long-term health.

Local Chicago Connection

Finding a healthy, acclimated Panther Grouper locally in the Chicago area is a huge win for hobbyists. It saves the stress of shipping and allows you to see the health and vibrancy of the fish in person.
